The Many Faces of Sandals – Sandal Types Defined

Posted on September 1st, 2010 in Flip Flops for men by flipflops  Tagged , ,

You will see a lot of confusing terms thrown around to describe sandals – here is a short glossary that will have you keeping your friends on their toes with your impressive knowledge of the world of sandals! In addition we will tell you where to wear these styles.

Gladiator

This sandal often has many straps on the sole to hold the foot to the upper sole, and one thick band that goes around the ankle. They are so named as gladiators wore this type of sandal when fighting. Perfect for the nightclub.

Sport Sandals

Any sandal specifically designed for hiking or other activities. Most of the more “comfortable” sandals fit in this category. You will frequently see them being worn by men and students in the summer – these more casual sandals are best kept to casual settings and out of the office or the dance floor.

Flip-Flop

So named for the sound that they make when the wearer walks, the flip-flop or zori sandal is loosely secured to the foot by means of a strap in between the toes. The flip-flop originated from the Japanese zori, which was formally worn with white socks – at least they weren’t black! Flip-flops are best reserved for the beach or around the house only.

City Sandal

This popular term means a sandal that you would not take hiking – effectively the opposite of a sport sandal. They are made for getting around sidewalks without getting stuck and are usually quite dressy in their design. Work appropriate sandals.

Evening Sandals

An evening sandal is meant to look hot. Choose an evening sandal with a thicker heel if you plan to spend some time dancing – a thinner, more sophisticated heel is perfect for dinner and casual conversation with friends.

Special Occasion Sandals

This term usually applies to bridal sandals, but can refer to a dressier evening sandal as well. A very dressy occasion or a wedding call for these sandals.

Espadrille

A flat sandal with a flexible sole and fabric upper. Good for a more casual office or an outing with friends.

Huarache

A sling-backed sandal with a small heel and an upper consisting of woven leather strips. Again a more casual sandal.

Clog

A heavy sandal with a thick sole. The popular clogs on the market today incorporate a cork heel. Depending on the dressiness of the upper, these sandals can be work, dinner, or even dance appropriate.

T-Strap

A T-Strap comes up between the toes and hooks onto an ankle strap to hold the foot firmly in place with minimal coverage of the foot. Perfect for days at the beach or those first few days of summer when you want to get some sun on your feet. A casual sandal meant for evenings and weekends out, not an office option.

Toe Loop

The toe loop or toe ring sandal will keep the little toe firmly in place; also a very popular style this season! Similar to the T-Strap, the casual nature of this sandal usually mean it is best confined to areas outside of the corporate cubicle.

Wedges

A wedge sandal sports a wedge heel, a heel that incorporates a thick sole capped off with a small heel. This is more of a style for a dress sandal, and one that is quite fashionable due to the pleasing shape of the wedge. As per the clog, the wedge’s suitability for a particular spot all depends on the dressiness of its upper. Wedges are frequently made into dressier sandals – there isn’t that much that is casual about them!

Women’s Flip Flops – What It’s Taught Me About Being a Better Writer

Posted on August 26th, 2010 in Flip Flops for women by flipflops  Tagged , , ,

I bet if you do any writing whatsoever, at some point you felt you had writers block.

Even just a blog. I’ve got a blog or two about women’s flip flops and fashion, and it can be tough to keep it up to date. We all know Google and our fans and readers love to get new content. But for a lot of us, new content is hard to come by.

But is it really?

Here are is one huge techniques I’ve started using that really kicks writer’s block in the butt.

Autoblogging.

What’s autoblogging you ask? You might even be asking “Oh no, isn’t that the thing all these spam blogs are made from”?

Well, yes, autoblogging seems to have it’s start from the land of black hat search engine optimization.

It’s a tool folks use to basically setup a robot and have it blog constantly. It’ll go out to places like Yahoo News, Yahoo Answers, Amazon, YouTube, wherever, and scrape together content from those places to create a keyword rich blog post.

You can see how someone might use that for “evil” by creating a blog on auto pilot.

But just like how so much great technology starts in “bad” places (look at the porn industry and the innovations they’ve made to video, DVD’s, marketing, etc), autoblogging has the potential for being used for so much good.

Here’s how I use it for my own purpose.

I’ve gone ahead and setup an autoblog watching all sorts of keywords I’m interested in. Flip flops, sandals, beach, summertime, etc.

But I also leave the robot in Draft mode. I don’t let the guy just create posts for me and publish them. What I do is I go in and look at the drafts he’s made and see if anything is actually interesting.

More often than not something is.

I’ve found out about all sorts of crazy things related to flip flops. Some hilarious video of a drunk guy trying to get into his sandals, some protest in Israel where people are wearing flip flops and jeans to work, the arsenic poisoning going on in Bangladesh.

And I don’t just publish the post that the robot makes. I use a snippet of the post as a seed for my own post.

So I basically say “Oh that news about Bangladesh is very interesting. Here, let me write my own post on it, and cite a couple sentences from the original article so the reader has context”.

And whallah, an idea for post given to me from a robot.

Some autoblogging software costs money, so for a poor mans version of this, I suggest you setup a bunch of Google/Yahoo News alerts, or learn to use RSS feeds very well. So you have a constant barrage of ideas to your RSS reader or inbox for blog posts.

The advantage of the autoblogger though is that it it seems any little bit of help, well, helps get us over the hill of creating something. So just that two sentences in cites in a post, can make a big difference to me getting off my butt and getting some thoughts and words on paper. It’s better than staring at a blank screen, starting from scratch.

Adjusting to Being ‘Tween-age With an Italian Charm Bracelet

Posted on August 25th, 2010 in Flip Flops for men by flipflops  Tagged , , ,

Of all of the ages and stages of growing up, pre-teenage is, by far, the most difficult for a young lady. Dormant hormones are suddenly becoming active. Mood swings are uncontrollable and inevitable. It is a very awkward stage because of physical developments as well as emotional inconsistencies. Girls in this age range are too old for some things, yet too young for other things. They are no longer little girls, but not quite adolescents. This stage is referred to as the ‘Tween-age.

Many fashion styles are deemed inappropriate for ‘tween-age girls. This goes for jewelry selections, as well. However, I have found that an Italian Charm Bracelet is a very practical piece of jewelry for ‘tween-agers, or all ages for that matter. Italian Charm Bracelets are very affordable, yet stylish, jewelry which can be customized to fit every pre-teen’s personality.

There are many different Italian Charms from which to choose to design an Italian Charm Bracelet. There are collector’s charms ranging from Coca-Cola to Elvis; or Hello Kitty to Disney to name a few.

For the sports enthusiasts, Italian charms for soccer, football, softball, and NASCAR are available. Animal Italian charms could include animals from the ocean, nature animals and pets. There are also numerous fun Italian charms including, but not limited to flip-flops, beach umbrellas, ice cream cones and rainbows. The selections of Italian charms are endless.

Fitting in with peers and being accepted as a member of ‘tween society is very important for a young lady. What better way to do this than to design her very own Italian Charm Bracelet. This practical piece of jewelry is so inexpensive, a ‘tween-age girl can easily afford to purchase it with her own babysitting or allowance cash, giving her the satisfaction of making independent choices. Designing her very own Italian Charm Bracelet shows off her creativity and gives her the confidence she requires to make her personal fashion statement. Best of all, Italian charms are interchangeable and can easily be changed or added to her Italian Charm Bracelet, depending on her every-changing whims.

Italian Charm Bracelets are an ideal solution to helping pre-teenage girls adjust to living in that ‘tween stage. They can show off their creativity in designing them. Girls can gain confidence and be accepted by their peers by wearing them. Best of all, pre-teen girls can practice their independence by being able to purchase her Italian Charm Bracelet with her own money. Yes, this unique piece of jewelry, indeed, can help buffer growing pains ‘tween-age girls go through. In fact, Italian Charm Bracelets are so versatile, affordable, and stylish, girls of ALL ages enjoy them!

Fashion Tips For Tall Women

Posted on August 24th, 2010 in Flip Flops for women by flipflops  Tagged

If you are tall you should think of yourself lucky as you have a model figure. Being tall is easier than being petite as most clothes are made for the taller figure. So you will have an easier time shopping and finding clothes that fit and look great on you. There are some women who are uncomfortable with their tall height and want to draw the attention away from it. Here are a few tips to help you to do this.

You should try to differentiate your top half from the bottom half. To stop eyes from seeing you as one long line. Use horizontal details on your outfits such as diagonal lines or wide belts. Wearing a large wide belt will cut the body in half and make it seem less longer.

Wear your tops over your skirt or trousers, as this cuts height over the waist area. Try to avoid wearing too much pattern. If you are wearing a dress then try to avoid pattern altogether. Wear a different colour on the top and bottom half. You could try black and white or any two contrasting colours. Also try to stick to wearing a lighter colour with a darker colour.

Wear larger accessories, such as big jewellery or a large handbag. The larger accessories will draw all the attention. Avoid wearing small jewellery, it will look out of proportion. If you really want to look shorter, then avoid wearing heels. There are so many flat shoes styles out at the moment that you will be spoilt for choice. Choose from ballet styles to flip flops. The flat shoes are a welcome addition to most tall women’s wardrobe.

Strategic Business Writing – 5 Rules to Write Right

Posted on August 22nd, 2010 in Flip Flops for women by flipflops  Tagged , ,

While everything about the way we do business has changed in the last decade, most business writers tend to write the way they always have. They use the language, the style and the tone they believe sounds business-like. The problem is, unless you are a new MBA grad, it is likely you are shamefully out of date–and writing the way you always have is bad for business.

Rule 1: Use simple language

Of course you’ve heard that before, but you probably don’t believe it. Not really. Yet it is a hard and fast rule–whether you are writing down, across or up. It is always true.

Perhaps you think you need big words to show your reader you are well educated. Or jargon to demonstrate your expertise. Or long words to sound impressive. You may be the most conversational person on the planet, but when it comes to clicking those keys, you become a whole other person–using self-conscious and condescending language–trying too hard to “make it sound good.”

Consider this. When President Kennedy spoke his immortal lines, he did not say: Refuse to request methodologies from your nation for personal assistance. He simply said: Ask not what your country can do for you. When Dr. King gave his most famous speech, he did not say: I possess a reverie. He said: I have a dream. When Churchill spoke to his countrymen in their hour of peril, he did not say: We intend to engage the enemy in battle on the coastline. He said: We shall fight them on the beaches.

These were brilliant, articulate men who inspired generations and understood the value of simple, clear, conversational language. Be like the brilliant orators and do what they do. Use the shortest, crispest word you can find to get your message across.

Rule 2: Begin with the reader

If you want a positive response from your reader, start with your reader–not with you. Don’t open with, “Company XYZ is proud to announce…” Who cares? Do not begin with an “I” statement when a “you” statement will make your reader sit up and pay attention. The truth is, there is nothing more important to me than me. And if you start with me, I will read on.

Rule 3: Write with warmth

Your letter or e-mail to a customer or client is a conversation. True, it is a one-way conversation, but it is a conversation nonetheless. A good conversation sounds like friends talking. It is warm, friendly and enthusiastic. Eliminate the cold and trite phrases that get in the way of good conversation–phrases like “pursuant to the abovementioned matter” and “as per our conversation” or “enclosed please find.” Delete the jargon, the clichés and the market-speak that make you sound too distant and disinterested. Cut the excess business verbiage. Write with warmth and your reader will respond warmly.

Rule 4: Limit the content

Your readers need to know only what they need to know. Nothing more. As far as your reader is concerned, everything extra is garbage. If you truly think I might be interested in some additional detail, attach it–and tell me that’s what you have done. Do not compel me to plod through pages of content just because you couldn’t be bothered paying attention to my needs; I will appreciate your thoughtfulness.

Rule 5: Close with a call for action

A call for action tells the reader exactly what should happen next; it does not make the reader guess. “I hope the above has been helpful” is not at all helpful. Will you call me? Should I call you? Tell me what to do and I will do it. Tell me when I can expect to hear from you and I will wait. Amazing but true.

Writing for today’s business reader is not difficult. It requires an understanding of the way people read and attention to the elements that motivate a positive response. And now you have it. Follow these five rules and write like a pro.

Old Navy ally with CityTeam for a Perfect Day

Posted on August 20th, 2010 in Flip Flops for women by flipflops  Tagged ,

In June 2009, Old Navy hosted a flip flop drive in multiple stores around the Bay Area in California. Customers were able to receive a discount on their purchases if they bought a pair of kids-sized flip flops and donated them to CityTeam. By the end of the day, Old Navy was able to collect 3400 flip flops for CityTeam to bring to children in Africa, who do not have shoes to protect their bare feet from harmful diseases. CityTeam greatly appreciates your involvement in this great cause, and we would like to thank Old Navy and YOU for partnering with us to make a difference in the lives of these African children who have so little.

A Few Facts About Flip-Flops

Posted on August 19th, 2010 in Flip Flops for men by flipflops  Tagged

The rubber soled thong sandals known as flip-flops-referred to as jandals or slippers in some other cultures– have existed in one way or another for over 6,000 years, although the vernacular term “flip flop” attributed to them is of recent lineage, and is actually a trademark term owned by a German company who produces them in their product line. The precursor to the modern flip flop dates back to ancient cultures, where Egyptians wore these thong shoes as a sign of royalty and privilege, with some women decking their particular sandals with jewels and Pharaohs wearing a style of the sandals that were turned up slightly more than those worn by the common man. Depictions of this footwear can be found in ancient Egyptian cave paintings. Footwear in many early cultures was a sign of rank and position in society, and flip flops were certainly no exception.

Given the status accorded these ancient shoes, it might be assumed that only the finest materials were always used, however this was not always the case with these sandals worn throughout history. While today’s flip flops are usually made of rubber construction, different cultures created flip flops using varied materials such as papyrus, palm leaves, rice, raw hide, canvas and wood, to name a few. The materials used were simply an extension of the culture’s available textile and agricultural supply. Egypt would most likely use papyrus while Rome would use leather to create sturdy flip flips that military generals could wear. In addition to social status, flip flops provided protection and a defense against diseases easily transmitted through contact with the soil.

While the basic style of a flip flop remained the same-a flat footed sandal with one strap around one of the toes-there were variations on the basic theme. Some ancient cultures placed the strap around the big toe while others used the second or the middle toe.  The Japanese developed a form of the sandal called the “Zori” which they used in teaching children how to walk. Modern forms of this woven flip flop appeared on the beaches of New Zealand in the early 20th century.

Zoris continued in prominence as a key catalyst for introducing flip flops into common culture, beginning in World War II when soldiers brought them back as keepsakes, and then after the Korean War when rubber versions of the sandals were brought back by soldiers as well. From that time in the 1950’s on, flip flops became part of the rage in popular culture as their construction and durability made them usable as common footwear.

After flip flops entered popular culture soon everyone was seen sporting these inexpensive styles of footwear, regardless of individual status in society. California in particular made flip flops prevalent on the beaches and as more and more people wore them eventually the flip flop craze spread across the nation. They continued as a largely informal style of footwear worn by everyone, and because of their inexpensive construction proved to be ideal for people in developing countries as well, often selling for less than $1 and in some cases being constructed from disposable materials such as recycled tires.

As with blue jeans, which started out as informal attire worn in public and gradually attracted the attention of fashion designers, flip flops have evolved into fashion statements of their own. Dressier versions of the sandals such as the British Havaianas have some gold studded versions of the footwear, and other styles are made of leather and suede and are decked with jewels. Hollywood’s stars and supermodels have been known to wear these dressier, more expensive versions to premier events and there are also flip flops created for men, and those for brides to be as well.

Flip flops will continue to be used in one way or another. They can function as informal or formal accessories, depending upon the occasion, and are appropriate for people in all classes of society. Whether you decide to use them as expensive fashion statements or just to flop around the house, flip flops are a versatile and durable form of footwear that are here to stay.
